Are Modern Games Becoming Too Predictable? How Can Developers Keep Players Surprised?

I have been thinking about how many modern games are becoming easier to understand but sometimes less surprising. Many titles now follow familiar patterns: similar progression systems, repeated rewards, predictable challenges, and mechanics designed mainly around keeping players engaged for longer periods.
While these systems can make games more accessible, I wonder if they also reduce the feeling of discovery that made older games memorable.
For example, some of the most enjoyable moments in gaming often come from unexpected situations — finding a new strategy, encountering a surprising mechanic, or solving a challenge in a way the developer did not intend.
Do you think modern game design focuses too much on player retention and not enough on creating unique experiences?
